Improve Your Learning and Memory.: Your Kid May Be Smart. Just Don’t Tell Him So Too Often
Every kd isn't smart but every kid (and adult) needs a "growth mindset." Please read this article. "Research by Carol Dweck and colleagues at Stanford demonstrated that the students who are most likely to learn from their mistakes are those who don’t think of themselves as smart as such but smart enough to get smarter. They have a “growth mindset,” a belief system that they can get better if they will just invest the time and effort."
"In one of the group’s experiments, half of the students were repeatedly praised for “being smart,” and these students were not good at learning from mistakes. It is not clear why. Maybe they thought the problem was in the learning material, not in them. The other half of students were praised for effort and improvement and these students got better and made fewer mistakes. Several months later, all students repeated a standardized test, and the “smart” students’ scores dropped 20%, while the “growth mindset” students scored 30% higher." Praise students for effort not for being smart. bottom line. everyone is not a genius -

The ubiquity of books is a point but this article is an example of how it is easy to jump to incorrect conclusions, especially if you have never taught. I think that in a few years that schools and unions will reverse course and beg their teachers to blog. If you dont joinnthe conversation, the comversation moves on without you and goes to places you nor the world (once it sees the impact) do not wish to go. There are good points here. Never be afraid to read views different from your own. the fact remains that the barrier for homeschoolimg is getting less expensive by the day.

Educational publishers supporting sopa
Pearson Education, Cengage Learning, McGraw-Hill Education, Macmillan, Scholastic, etc are among the educationall publishers supporting SOPA. this bill has many of us cringing just because it puts the power to shut down just about any website in the hands of the copyright holder in a pretty "guilty until proven innocent" type method that won't consider fair use until your site is already down. Perhaps I am oversimplifying but as one who had a Ning used for the digiteen project operated by our nonprofit almost pulled because the coyright holder and !Ning had no way to "let us" claim fair use, this is a very bad idea or at best case, a very bad implementation of a somewhat decent idea.

Ellen Siminoff: All Classes Great and Small
On one thing I totally agree with this article: students should have pre- high school graduation experience collaborating with humdreds (eventually thousands) of other students. This article argues against needing small class sizes in schools. Where it falls short is the fact that if we truly want to reach each child, large class sizes are an anathema to personalized learning environments like mine where i have each student doing their own Freshan project, for example.

Adobe design achiement awards 2012. Students are invited to compete in 13 categories, including Game Design and Development, as well as Application Development and Mobile Design. Pudding vending machine tells kids to scram
No undoing for you! Face scanning uses the measurements between your eyes and a few other dimensions to determine if a person is old enough to buy something out of the machine. But the fact that it is put on a jello pudding machine is pretty funny to me. Guess junior will need an older sibling tonget that jello for him. Humor aside, there could be use for this in areas served by kids and adults although kids do get around obstacles when they want to.

An overview of SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and what it means to education. Fair use would become harder to defend from companies that don't care you are a school. Or, what if you're using a service like Ning that is for profit and charging you but you are a non profit. As the receipient of a take down notice for our digiteen project run through our nonprofit, it didn't matter that we responded to the concerns -- they ignore fair use and because Ning charges, they threatened to take us down. This survey is designed to educate and activate you. With the size of my house and the fact I have a lot of electronics 83 slaves"work" for me with the primary impact in Asia. This is not about guilt but facts about our world today. What can I do? We shoud advocate that businesses look ino their supply chain to determine f the good are made by people who are free or if they are, in fact, slaves. Create awareness. Let businesses know there is surging interest in abolishing slavery.
Don't complain about slavery in America over 100 years a go when ou are willing to do nothing now. Provocative test. -
Organizing Your iPad Home Screen: A case Study - Lessons
This is a video I made in just 2 minutes on my iPad. I didn't have to go to educreations' website first but did everything on my iPad. I cannot watch the web version, however as it is flash based. You can create public or private classes and easily share the videos. Very cool implementation of simple screencasting. This would be great for ll schools with 1:1 iPads. Need to get if you can view class content from their app without going to web. Very easy. Wow.

As you think about next year, it is great to plan deep projects with historical meaning. As I was looking up things that happened 100 years a go in 1912, one jumped out at me. The Titanic Sunk on April 11, 1912. There are a ton of resources already available on this topic but it would make for an interesting project of some sort as the fascination with the event doesn't seem to have waned much.

While I do leave time for my kids to have a break, I do try to find things that will encourage their love of learning that I sneak in there kind of like sneaking vegetables into things without them knowing. Text Messaging helps Curb Problem Drinking
This research shows that cell phone text messages can be used curb problem drinking as compared to a control group that did not receive the text messages. This begs to ask. How can cell phone text messages be used to help with other behaviors? Studying? Test reminders? Behavioral issues? Weight loss? Cell phones are a great friend of education BECAUSE THEY ARE ALWAYS WITH STUDENTS. Kids have a computer in their pocket that we choose to ignore because we are unwilling to teach them the proper way to behave. It is easier to lock up the phones than teach good judgement and the ability to focus. Hold kids accountable but make friends with cell phones, they are here to stay.

Julie and I spent some time with Silvia Tolisano talking about global collaboration, telling the story of how the flat classroom started and why we kept it going and the reason for the book. Also we snuck into the things shared in the book that we hope will help those involved in global education make it scalable and consistent. Probably the most fun was our discussion near the end about how Silvia and I "met" online and how we covered ISTE2006 from afar on our computers (pre twitter.) it was a fun talk.

Take time to Talk to Students BEFORE the Holiday Break

I like to remind them of a few things:
- Big picture about SAT and how many times they need to take it to get to their best performance (about 5, I've seen, starting in their freshman year to learn how to take the test.)
- The difference between top tier colleges and others and how they should shoot for the best that they can get into and then if they fall short, they're still in good shape.
- To talk to parents and family about plans for the future while they are hanging out.
- To make wise choices, hang out with good people and that it is better to walk away from a friend than to walk away from their future. (See Sometimes a teacher's gotta preach.)
- That I love them and have as my goal to help each of them find something that they are incredibly good at doing.
- That sometimes we have to do things we don't like to get the great things in life but that we also need to take a break and recharge sometimes.
Yes, these things are teacher-y. Remember, some students don't hear this at home.
I had a principal in high school who I loved. He took the whole school and had us all watch Cool Hand Luke over a 4 week period (a Tuesday assembly of 30 minutes each Tuesday) to talk about how just a small dumb thing can ruin your whole life. He told us to watch the small indiscretions because those turned into big life changing things all too easily, especially when alcohol is involved. (Cool Hand Luke was locked up for smashing parking meters during a drunken night and ended up dying in a failed prison escape.)
I remember that lesson. I remember what he said. He said a lot. I probably have forgotten most of it but I haven't forgotten the fact that he told us what we needed to hear even when we didn't want to hear it.
I want to be that Jimminy Cricket conscience for my students. Even when they don't like it.
Take time to say what they need to hear, in love. Even if they make fun of you.. You're not in your classroom to be popular, you're there to shape the future. Society tomorrow will reap what we sow in our classrooms today. Plant the seeds of character and good choices and use the fact that the kids know you love them to say what they need to hear.
Remember your noble calling, teacher.

Dress the Christmas Tree on your Interactive Whiteboard
Remember the old feltboards we used to use? Now, we have one for your Interactive whiteboard. Talk about the different words as you pull them into the tree. You could decorate the tree and have it on your board during your class party!

YouTube For Schools: A Safer Way For Students To Learn | Edudemic
If you use Google apps for education you now have access to YouTube for schools. This strips out comments and related videos. While not all videos are ported over, this is a solution for those overly restricted schools.

I love Kanban boards of all kinds. I use Fogbugz to do trouble ticket tracking for my school. They've recently given it a facelift and it is incredibly useful and could be used for everything from maintenance tracking to trouble tickets. This is a plug in for the software called Kanban board that lets me convert the tickets to a kanban board. Love it!

A video game to bring awareness to the crisis in Darfur to help students know what is happening and how they can act. This is something you may want to schedule in to your next semester if it is too upsetting around Christmas. However, it may be great to encourage kids to use Christmas money not just on themselves.

Free iPad app and Contest to win iPad2 that ends Friday
I've already written about the ipad app with math games from TES. (Look for Tes Christmas in the store.) This is a nice post from Pooky Hesmondhalgh from the UK about the app and the contest. All you have to do is download the app, write a review of the app in the iTunes store and then tweet about the review with the hashtag #Tesxmas and you'll be entered to win a free iPad2 on Friday.It is a nice set of three games. My son and I played them on Sunday night so he could get his review in.

Are All Bloggers Journalists? - Room for Debate - NYTimes.com
A judge rules that a blogger is not a journalist because she was not affiliated with a "newspaper, magazine, periodical, book, pamphlet, news service, wire service,news or feature syndicate, or cable television syndicate." I find this definition troublesome. For example, my blog is featured on alltop - does that mean I'm syndicated and now safe? I have a book in January, does that mean I'm safe as a journalist? When is one just a person writing and when does a person become a "journalist" per se? Bottom line,be careful what you say on your blog - the definition of journalist is still very much defined by a main stream media mindset.
