Computex 2012: Viewsonic VCD22 22 inch Android ‘tablet’ hands-on

Computex 2012, held in Taipei, was a real eye-opener when it comes to the current as well as future potential of tablet technology, with bigger displays and multiple platform availability the order of the day.
As an example, or in case you’ve missed it, check out our hands-on video of the ASUS Transformer AiO which features an 18.4″ display and supports both Android 4.0 and Windows 8. If you think that is big, the device we’re looking at right now, the Viewsonic VCD22 “tablet” is almost 4 inch bigger!
Yes, as the name suggests, the VCD22 features a massive 22-inch display with a resolution of 1920×1080. Before we talk any further about this tablet, I know many of you are thinking, “Pics or it never happened.” We can do you one better and show you a hands-on video of the device, introduced by our very own editor-in-chief, Darcy Lacouvee.


As mentioned, the VCD22 cannot exactly be called a tablet, as it does not house a battery but instead requires a power connection at all times. Specifications of the device include:

• Android 4.0 out of the box
• 1920×1080 full HD display
• 1 Ghz, dual-core TI OMAP 4428 processor
• 1GB RAM
• 8GB internal storage, expandable via microSD
• HDMI-in
• 1.2MP front camera

As you can see from the specifications, the device features an HDMI-in port, which means that it will function as a display as well. Of course, no one is going to be carrying this “tablet” around as a portable option, but will work ideally for anyone looking for an Android PC or display for the home. The ViewSonic VCD22 will be available internationally from August and will cost a very reasonable $479.
We already have the “phablet” which attempts to bridge the gap between smartphones and tablets. Anyone want to take a shot at coming up with a name for devices that bridge the gap between tablets and televisions?
