Sony Xperia Tipo ST21i Initial Specs & Features Leaked

We know that Japanese Electronics Company—Sony—would be releasing a bunch of Android smartphones this year and one of them is Sony Xperia Tapioca. We just learned today through leaked information that it was renamed to Sony Xperia Tipo ST21i. Thus, we will be getting an entry-level Android device yet again in the following weeks. There have been many comprehensive previews of ST21i Tapioca so it came a bit of a shock to us to hear that another name would be coming in but then it is reassuring to know the specs are the same. That said, perhaps it would be just right to talk about the initial specs and features of Sony Xperia Tipo ST21i.
Xperia Tipo ST21i
Hardware. Being an entry-level Android smart phone, we can almost predict the speed of a processor that will be used. And rightly so, Sony Xperia Tipo ST21i will be sporting a single-core Qualcomm MSM7227 system on chip (SOC) with a clockspeed of 800MHz. Typical of Qualcomm chipset is a graphics processor attached and thus MSM7227 also has Adreno 200 GPU. This specification of the CPU is actually typical of all entry-level Android devices available in the market today. Some manufacturers even go lower than this down to 600MHz which means that the performance of the device will surely be bottle-necked.
RAM. Sony Xperia Tipo ST21i’s 800MHz CPU will be paired with 512MB of random access memory (RAM). Usually, we are seeing that 256MB RAM being paired with this kind of CPU but this time around, Sony seems to come in hot and prepared. We already know what version of Android this device will operate on, having 512MB will tell us that the company is actually preparing for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), although a part of me was saying that it will have Android 2.3 Gingerbread pre-installed upon release just like any other Sony devices recently released or announced. But that’s not the case here.
Display. Aside from being a budget-friendly smartphone, Sony Xperia Tipo is also a pocket-size device and that is proven with its 3.2-inch display. Amazingly, this smaller display carries a higher VGA resolution of up to 640 x 480 pixels, this is made possible by its GPU, of course. While we can’t really expect that Sony would sport something like an AMOLED display technology or the Super LCD, this device’s display is something you can actually live with—it’s not really bad.
Camera. What came as a surprise to me though, is the camera. Having known Sony’s Cybershot technology which it has started integrating into its devices, I can’t seem to believe that this device will only get a camera with just 3 megapixels. Basically, this device is not meant for high-resolution pictures, although having 3MP camera is not really bad. I mean we’ve seen a lot of devices with cameras as low as 2MP.
With all those mediocre specs given to Sony Xperia Tipo, it’s a good thing that Sony actually wants this device to run on Android ICS. That’s the part you can find comfort with knowing that Android devices running on Gingerbread are actually treated as being dated. Also, the company has given this device a fairly powerful battery with 1450mAh. That would provide power to this device for up to 5 to 6 hours of continuous talk time.
