Official Samsung Galaxy S3 (I-9300) Source Code Now Available for Download

Samsung officially dropped the official source code of Galaxy S3 for eager developers. As of today, the Samsung Galaxy S3 sources code can be downloaded from the company’s Open Source Community including the master copy, stock and the stock_update1. It means that Samsung is trying to make its premium device’s firmware as transparent for developers as possible which is of course, a good thing.

There are a lot of benefits or advantages when a company drops the official source code for developers to see. Not only does it makes the device more popular in both the developer and user communities, but new innovations will surely be achieved in time that could make things a lot better than it already is. This time, you would surely know that if millions of heads convene to make single source code better, good and amazing things happen. So, let’s try to talk about the basic benefits any Samsung Galaxy S3 owners can get after Samsung officially dropped the source code to the public.
People Can Understand GS3 Better. Knowing how things operate in a powerful and expensive device like Galaxy S3 can make owners understand and learn its full potential. Everyone, including both developers and mere owners alike, is being fed by the most obvious features the device brings. However, there is a ton of things people don’t know about it, thus the knowledge of the device is limited only to what the company tells about. Providing the official source code to the people would educate the owners so that they can maximize or optimize their use of such a powerful device.
Innovations Are Just Around The Corner. If you’ve been wondering why companies like Samsung, HTC, LG, etc. often leak the official firmware of their devices, it’s because aside from the brilliant minds of their official developers, they also want to know what millions of developers have in mind for their devices. However, they couldn’t get the information they need without leaking the source code or the official firmware. With this, developers would be able to understand how software interacts with the hardware and tweaks can be done to make things a lot better or faster in most cases. While we have already seen hundreds of ROMs developed by groups like XDA Developers without the help of the official firmware, having a solid reference which can be found in official firmware is very helpful in developing new firmware or ROMs stuffed with tons of cool features.
New & Better Custom ROMs. If given a chance to see or learn the fundamentals of the source code of Samsung Galaxy S3, no developer would say no knowing it would unlock some things he/she hasn’t known before. Knowing the very foundation of the source code of a certain device would always result to something new and better. In this case since Samsung has already did the best thing to do, we would be able to see hundreds of custom ROMs in the following weeks or months and we can always be assured that they are better than the typical custom firmware developed out of stock Android versions.
Non-developers couldn’t see the importance of Samsung’s actions but they would surely be able to feel the good results when there are hundreds of good ROMs available in the following weeks. Based on the trends, custom ROMs often offer really cool features or have some good enhancements. However, it is still the prerogative of the owner if he wants to run custom firmware on his premium device. There are risks one should take but majority of the people who are using custom firmware are more satisfied than those who are only using stock. But of course that is subjective.
